THE TWELVE STEPS OF AA
AND THEIR BIBLICAL COMPARISONS

1. WE ADMITTED WE WERE POWERLESS OVER ALCOHOL
THAT OUR LIVES HAD BECOME UNMANAGEABLE.

"1 know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out." Romans 7:18

2. CAME TO BELIEVE THAT A POWER GREATER
THAN OURSELVES COULD RESTORE US TO SANITY.

"For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." II Timothy 1 :7

3. MADE A DECISION TO TURN OUR WILL AND OUR LIVES
OVER TO THE CARE OF GOD AS WE UNDERSTOOD HIM.

"If any one chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own." John 7:17

4. MADE A SEARCHING AND FEARLESS, MORAL INVENTORY OF OURSELVES.
"For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me." Psalm 51 :3
"Let us search and test our ways, then let us return to the Lord." Lamentations 3:40

5. ADMITTED TO GOD, TO OURSELVES AND TO ANOTHER
HUMAN BEING THE EXACT NATURE OF OUR WRONGS
.
"1 acknowledged my sin to you, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord; and you forgave the iniquity (guilt) of my sin." Psalm 32:5
"Confess you faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed." James 5:16

6. WERE ENTIRELY READY TO HAVE GOD REMOVE ALL THESE DEFECTS OF CHARACTER.
"Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin." Psalm 51 :2
"If you become willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land."
Is. 1: 19

7. HUMBLY ASKED HIM TO REMOVE ALL OUR SHORTCOMINGS.
"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up." James 4:10
"Create in me a clean heart, O God: and renew aright spirit within me." Psalm 51: 10

8. MADE A LIST OF PERSONS WE HAD HARMED
AND BECAME WILLING TO MAKE AMENDS TO THEM ALL.
"First be reconciled to your brother and then come and present your offering." Matthew 5:24

9. MADE DIRECT AMENDS TO SUCH PEOPLE WHEREVER POSSIBLE,
EXCEPT  WHEN TO DO SO WOULD INJURE THEM OR OTHERS.

"Therefore, however you want people to treat you, so treat them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 7:12

10. CONTINUED TO TAKE PERSONAL INVENTORY
AND WHEN WE WERE WRONG PROMPTLY ADMITTED IT.

"For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he out to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of  faith." Romans 12:3

11. SOUGHT THROUGH PRAYER AND MEDITATION TO IMPROVE
OUR CONSCIOUS CONTACT  WITH GOD AS WE UNDERSTOOD HIM,
PRAYING ONLY FOR KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WILL FOR US AND
THE POWER TO CARRY THAT OUT.

"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in your sight O Lord." Psalm 19:14
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

12. HAVING HAD A SPIRITUAL AWAKENING AS THE RESULT OF THESE
STEPS, WE TRIED TO CARRY THIS MESSAGE TO ALCOHOLICS,
AND PRACTICE THESE PRINCIPLES IN ALL OUR AFFAIRS.
"Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to yourselves, lest you be tempted." Galatians 6: 1
